Merriam-Webster dictionary has just released its list of new words for their 2007 edition of their dictionary. Here’s a link to a sampling of the almost 100 new words that made the cut. They include, among others, Bollywood, DVR, smackdown, sudoku, speed dating, and, of course, ginormous.
I am always intrigued by the creation of new words and wonder how it is that some come to stick and others fall away. Merriam-Webster also provides a link that attempts to provide insight into how they choose the words, available here.
Of course I also hold out hope that chickenjagging, the word my daughter Eleanor created, has a fighting chance. 🙂
