One way to see the the effect of the significance of place is to use maps. There is a series of maps up on the UK’s Telegraph website that shows the relative distribution of a variety of characteristics including the population of immigrants, wealth at different points in history, HIV prevalence, and a variety of other variables. The maps vary the size of the countries relative to each other to show the distribution of the population with the relevant characteristics. It makes for an effective visual representation. The series is titled “The Atlas of the Real World.”
